What We Do

Solanco Historical Society invites residents, descendants or anyone with an interest in southern Lancaster County to support this historical society by becoming a member. Meetings are held quarterly on the third Saturday of February, June, August and November in the archive warehouse meeting room. The archive is located across the road from the Robert Fulton Birthplace at 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (State Route 222), 6 miles south of Quarryville, Pennsylvania.

  • The Society provides free educational and informative programs each month, except May and December. Speakers are generally professors, authors, collectors or researchers on historical subjects, often relating to the “Southern End.”

  • The Society invites the public, genealogists and historical researchers to our archive warehouse for assistance by our archivists in locating information about ancestors or sites in southern Lancaster County. See the Archive Research section for hours. Research by special appointment can be arranged. There is a nominal charge for non-member researchers.

  • The Society sponsors fundraisers such as a holiday Greens Sale; an annual calendar with drawings of local sites by area artists; a gift shop with books, photographs, T-shirts and more; and occasional concerts and historical house tours.

  • On weekends during the summer months from Memorial Day through Labor Day, the Society opens the Robert Fulton Birthplace for first-come, first-served tours. Members serve as docents on a volunteer basis. It’s a fun way to greet the public with a common interest in our local history.

  • Society member-volunteers maintain the Colonial-period kitchen garden at the Robert Fulton Birthplace, as well as the mile-long trail and Birthplace buildings and grounds.
