Volunteer Opportunities

The majority of office and maintenance work at the Solanco Historical Society is accomplished by volunteers donating their time.  There is no paid staff but specialized maintenance work is occasionally carried out by paid contractors.

Each year, especially during the summer, volunteers are needed in the following areas:

  • Docents at the historic Robert Fulton Birthplace. The docent welcomes visitors and guides them to seating to view a video program and artifacts and later directs them to the garden and trail.

  • Gardeners to maintain the plots in the Robert Fulton Birthplace kitchen garden.

  • Cleaning assistants for one or two days in May to prepare the Birthplace for visitors.

Year-round volunteers are needed in these areas:

  • Assistant archivists to scan or photocopy documents. The office is open every Wednesday morning.

  • Groundskeepers to remove storm-damaged branches and debris and to keep pathways clear for visitors.

If you have an interest in any of the above positions, please come to the Society’s headquarters at 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Fulton Township and fill out a volunteer application,  or give us a call at 717-548-2679.
